Brian Haacke, MAoE Shanghai Conference November 2017

At the Manufacturing in the Age of Experience conference in Shanghai Dassault’s Brian Haacke presented together with McKinsey’s Forest Hou and Accenture’s Qi Wu in the Day 2 Strategic track.   https://events.3ds.com/manufacturing-age-of-experience-2017

Forest Hou opened the sessions with important insights on China based on their 400 company analysis.   His first claim was that China lags in technology and engineering innovation.   He then highlighted 4 key opportunities to improve productivity and close the gap between China and other developed markets such as USA, Japan and Germany.  These included i) achieve lean transformation, ii) promote new business process, iii) continue to innovate and migrate to upstream of industrial chain, iv) better understand customer insights and service middle class customers.

But one of the most eye-opening statistics Hou shared was when he said “I think around 60% of companies in China are still moving from 1.0 to 2.0, and there is a very weak base for lean management”.  The slide showing at the time further confirmed that >5% of Chinese players were in fact considered to be “Digital Pioneers” able to adopt Industry 4.0 practices.

Next up was Brian Haacke who spoke about platform as a strategy to digitalize companies product, processes and customers.  Not only internally, where most companies are still focused, but also externally to include and embrace ecosystem of suppliers, data and marketplaces.  He promoted 3DEXPEREINCE platform as a strategy to connect horizontally and vertically across the company and related value chains to create a true digital thread, improve efficiency and open a new world of big data opportunities.
Haacke claimed that OEM’s are looking to digitize and leverage their value chain more effectively while EMS or Contract Manufacturers are looking to move up the value chain into product concept and R&D type activities which was consistent with the key opportunities outlined by McKinsey.   A perfect storm for Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE Platform – a cloud based digital business platform with leading edge design, collaboration, simulation, manufacturing and big data intelligence applications.

Qi Wu confirmed that Accenture’s research matched that of McKinsey showing that in their studies 58% of Chinese companies have survived in the past without building up digital capacities while only 4% were considered “Digital High Performers” with both high digital and financial performance.

Wu further explained that the shift to digital affects the whole organization which complemented well the session lead by Brian Haacke, where he explained against the backdrop of the Accenture digital performance index “Digitization cannot be done by a single department.  It touches the full range of business activities across the value chain.”.   The 4 key element being i) digital strategy, ii) digital business culture, iii) digital production & delivery, iv) digital customer interaction.

On the path to digitization, data is the key.   The more data that exists means the more we can connect together with provides more opportunity to learn and improve.
